What To Expect With Puppy Jump Start B&T
Confidence Building
Your puppy views the world as an expansive playground, and throughout our board and train program, they encounter distinctive experiences and opportunities. Across the five-week duration, your dog will be consistently stimulated to surpass goals that exceed your expectations.
Structure & Boundaries
Puppies lack sufficient structure and boundaries that are usually taught in a pack. Our Board & Train introduces a set of guidelines for your puppy to adhere to so they know what is acceptable and what is off limits. Once established, maintaining these guidelines at home becomes more manageable.
Structured Play
Both you and your puppy will learn the importance of structured play. This is crucial because unrestricted play, initiated by your puppy, can inadvertently lead to behavior issues that may have gone unnoticed.
Treadmill Trained
Every Board & Train participant masters treadmill walking or running. This enables you to keep your dog active, even in limited time or during inclement weather. Additionally, it fosters confidence as your dog safely experiences treadmill activity alongside other dogs, simulating a pack walk.
Basic Into Advanced OB
During the initial three weeks of your puppy's program, our focus is on instilling good habits, fostering communication, and establishing the foundational principles of basic obedience. In the final two weeks of training upon your pup's return, we introduce advanced obedience techniques, emphasizing precise holding of positions, dependable recall, and enhanced communication skills.
Proper Socialization Skills
In a safe environment with obedience training, your puppy will interact with humans, dogs, horses, and cats, promoting healthy socialization. Although not all puppies may instinctively enjoy these interactions, it's vital for them to exhibit appropriate behavior. By using non-confrontational approaches and obedience training, your puppy will form positive associations with these interactions.
1st Phase Training Goals
During the initial three weeks of your puppy's training, we focus on fundamental aspects such as potty training, crate training, leash etiquette, and basic obedience commands. We establish a communication foundation and set the framework for proper boundaries and manners. This period harnesses your puppy's natural curiosity to instill positive habits effectively.
2nd Phase Training Goals
Upon your puppy's return at approximately 8 months old, we integrate the skills they have been practicing at home and introduce advanced obedience training. This includes extending the duration of down and sit stays, refining place commands, and initiating off-leash obedience training, focusing on reliable recall and heel commands.
How We Train...
We employ pillars of learning to teach dogs by associating unknown behaviors with familiar ones. Classical and operant conditioning are key methods we use. The quality of obedience depends on how the dog learns the behavior. The more involved the dog is in the learning process, the greater their drive towards obedience. Dogs have a cognitive level akin to a two-year-old and rely on conditioned responses while living in the moment. Our aim is to condition them in obedience to make it second nature and reliable.
Counter Conditioning
Your dog begins learning and self-conditioning from birth. Occasionally, undesired behaviors, anxiety, or fear stem from prolonged exposure or "single event learning." However, we can counter-condition these issues. It begins with solid obedience, patience, and the ability to understand your dog's cues. We'll also teach you how to do just that.
Building A Job
You might recognize this saying: your dog craves a purpose. Many behavior issues arise when dogs aren't fulfilling their breed's inherent roles. By channeling obedience training effectively within your dog's lifestyle, you provide them with a meaningful "job." Additionally, we'll instruct you on how to reward your dog, foster motivation, and demonstrate essential leadership qualities.
Understanding Pressure
All animals feel pressure to some degree. We don't learn without it. Dogs have two motivations in life. To seek an advantage and avoid discomfort. We are not any different. If you never teach your dog how to handle pressure it can be a great disservice to the animal. We start by teaching pressure as a good thing. Pressure means reward and then we show your dog what we want them to do in order to relieve the pressure.
